Groote Eylandt is culturally and musically diverse, a result of the strong social and other ties to nearby mainland and more distant groups. The people of Groote Eylandt refer to themselves as Wanindiljaugwa, their language is Anindiljaugwa, and there are something like 12 local descent groups who identify with or are affiliated with Groote Eylandt and the adjacent Bickerton Island. |

On Tuesday 27th June, Irish comedian Jimeoin performed at the Alyangula Recreational Club to a crowd of about 300. After meeting John Atkin, one of Alyangula’s police officers, in Darwin and being enticed by photos of impressive fish, Jimeoin and his crew, Fergus and Hamish jumped at the chance of visiting Groote. Jimeoin agreed to perform free of charge as all proceeds were donated to the Groote Eylandt & Milyakbura Youth Development Unit (GEMYDU).
During their stay, Jimeoin and his entourage enjoyed an eventful fishing trip, and explored the natural attractions at Groote Eylandt.
Groote Eylandt hopes to see Jimeoin, Fergus and Hamish return again soon!
