Among the tribes of Groote Eylandt in the Gulf of Carpentaria there were, or still are, widespread myths which describe huge reptillian creatures including lizards, even snakes, all of whom lived in waterholes. The Aborigines were afraid to approach these waterholes for fear of the beasts and always performed ceremonies in the hope of pleasing these monsters so that they might be safe to go near the watercourses. |
