Manganese is naturally found in many types of rock. Rocks containing high levels of manganese compounds are mined and then used to produce manganese metal. The metal is used in the production of steel to improve hardness, stiffness, and strength.

Welcome to Groote Eylandt. This beautiful, tropical island located in the Gulf of Carpentaria, in the Northern Territory of Australia is a truly unique place. Groote Eylandt and surrounding areas are wholly owned by the Anindilyakwa aboriginal people. In 1964, GEMCO entered into an agreement with the Traditional Owners, enabling mining in certain areas of the Eylandt and the establishment of a residential community. There are four major communities on Groote Eylandt: - Alyangula
- Angurugu
- Bickerton Island (Milyakburra)
- Umbakumba
The mining town of Alyangula is situated on picturesque Milner Bay on the northwestern side of Groote Eylandt. The township sits on a special purpose lease, and houses approximately 1200 employees, contractors and subcontractors that are working for GEMCO, as well as government workers and other service providers and their families. Alyangula enjoys excellent facilities, services and recreational opportunities. Groote Eylandt is an ideal environment for outdoor pursuits.
