GEMCO

On Groote Eylandt there lived a "Gecko" called Ipilya who was 100 yards long. His appearance was much like that of Kulta and he was reputed to live in the Numarika swamp. The Aborigines associated him with thunder and the monsoonal rain because of this fearsome creature's voice.

Shipping

ShippingHigh quality manganese products leave Groote Eylandt from GEMCO’s port at Milner Bay. Milner Bay is 16 km north of the minesite and strategically close to world markets.

In 1966, GEMCO’s first international shipment left for Japan. Today, GEMCO regularly exports products to customers world-wide, including Japan, South Korea, China, North America, India and the Middle East.

GEMCO’s port operates under the Maritime Transport Security Act 2003. The port has a 12.5 metre deep berth and can accommodate vessels up to “Handimax” size. The ship loading system is designed to handle a loading rate of 1200 tonnes per hour via a fixed head.

We welcome enquires at any time from qualified marine pilots interested in opportunities on Groote Eylandt.
