Groote Eylandt and surrounding areas are wholly owned by the Anindilyakwa aboriginal people. In 1964, GEMCO entered into an agreement with the Traditional Owners, enabling mining in certain areas of the Eylandt and the establishment of a residential community.
GEMCO has a very positive relationship with the Traditional Owners of Groote Eylandt. Established over many years, it is crucial to our license to operate. The Anindilyakwa Land Council is the representative body of the traditional owners. GEMCO representatives meet regularly with the Land Council to ensure our relationship continues to be strong and healthy.
GEMCO is committed to employing local Anindilyakwa people and has established a successful Aboriginal Employment Strategy. This program has received national recognition as best practice.
People wishing to visit Groote Eylandt must be hosted by a resident or obtain permission from the Anindilyakwa Land Council. For residents of Groote Eylandt, entry to land outside of GEMCO leases requires permission from the Anindilyakwa Land Council in the form of a permit. It is illegal to enter aboriginal land without the requisite permit.
There are areas of Groote Eylandt that are permanently closed to non-Anindilyakwa people, and all areas on the Eylandt are subject to closure without notice. GEMCO respects these conditions.
Groote Eylandt is a Restricted Alcohol Area at the request of the traditional owners. A system of liquor permits enables possession and consumption of alcohol in selected localities on Groote Eylandt.
