Living In Alyangula

ImageAlyangula, located on scenic Milner Bay, is a well-designed township with comfortable homes and community areas. Alyangula has a young and active population. The township has an excellent school, a well-stocked supermarket, a medical centre, two clubs, and a variety of specialty shops. There is an extensive range of recreational & sporting facilities, including an outdoor movie theatre, swimming pool, squash & tennis courts, gym, golf course and town oval. Groote Eylandt is an ideal environment for outdoor pursuits, and camping, fishing and day trips to the many beautiful sites around the Eylandt are popular.

Living In AlyangulaGEMCO owns the majority of the accommodation and facilities within the township, and is largely responsible for the administration of the town. GEMCO has staff, including a town administrator, and contract providers that supply services similar to those of a local council such as road maintenance, water supply, public facilities management, and garbage collection.

Education & Child Care

Alyangula Area School

Living In AlyangulaSet in attractive grounds, the Alyangula Area School provides excellent education to students from Pre School (age 4) to Year 10 Secondary. Currently, around 180 students attend the school. Facilities are excellent, with well-equipped classrooms, a comprehensive library, up-to-date computer and internet facilities, shaded playgrounds and a healthy canteen. Sporting activities are varied and include annual athletics and swimming carnivals.

The school encourages parent participation in learning and has a popular “shared learning” program with the students from other schools on Groote Eylandt. AAS has a Special Education Unit providing for the needs of children who need extra attention for language, social or learning difficulties, as well as for gifted and talented students.

The School Council is a parent/teacher body that is active in school policy and administrative decision-making. A Student Representative Council is the student body representative group and is a valuable line of communication for the students.

Alyangula Day Care Centre

Alyangula Playgroup Association

Playgroup is held twice weekly, utilising the Daycare facility and members’ residences. New members are always welcome. Annual fee is $20 per family and $1 per session per child.

Adult Education

Health Care

The Alyangula Health Centre provides quality health care to residents of Groote Eylandt. It caters for routine and emergency patients with consultation rooms, an emergency room, a two single bed observation ward, X-ray unit, waiting room and dental clinic. Afterhours services are available for emergencies and other serious health matters. There are two permanent doctors on Groote Eylandt.  Specialist doctors visit Groote Eylandt on a regular basis.

Patients requiring hospitalisation and specialist consultations are transferred to either Gove or Darwin, using the Aerial Medical Service or commercial airlines. Patients requiring emergency treatment may have initial care provided at the Health Centre and, if necessary, be evacuated to the nearest appropriate hospital or specialist at the discretion of the attending doctor.

Living In AlyangulaThe Northern Territory Government provides the Patients Assistance Travel Scheme (PATS) to help residents travelling to other centres for medical treatment. Pharmacy items and prescriptions are available through the local agency. Most medications are ordered from Darwin, usually taking 24 hours to arrive. Urgent supplies can be obtained by arrangement with the Health Centre.

Dental services are currently provided on a regular basis by a visiting dentist.

Veterinary Services

There is no full time veterinary service available on Groote Eylandt, but GOVETS visits Alyangula monthly to provide care for our pets. Contact (08) 8987 2110. Veterinary care cannot be provided by the Health Centre, even in the event of an emergency.

Alcohol

Groote Eylandt is a Restricted Alcohol Area at the request of the traditional owners. A system of liquor permits enables possession and consumption of alcohol at private residences, in licensed premises, and in selected localities around Alyangula and other areas of Groote Eylandt. The Alyangula Recreation Club and the Alyangula Golf Club are licensed premises in Alyangula.

Banking

Living In AlyangulaThe ANZ bank has a branch office in Alyangula, and the Post Office operates as an agency for the Commonwealth Bank.

Churches

The local Church holds regular Catholic and Anglican services.

Community Library

Located at Alyangula Area School, the community library has a comprehensive selection of books, magazines, videos and resource materials for all age groups. The library participates in an inter-library loan system in the NT in order to access additional materials. Computers and internet access are available for community use.  The Library is open Tuesday afternoons between 2.30 pm - 4.30pm, Thursday nights between 6.30pm - 8.30pm and and Saturday mornings 10.00am - 1.00pm.

Postal and Barge Services

The Post Office has all services normally available through Australia Post. Airmail arrives daily and surface mail arrives on the barge every Tuesday.

Perkins Shipping provides barge service of goods from Darwin and Gove. The barge leaves Darwin on Thursday each week and arrives at Groote Eylandt the following Tuesday. For more information, contact (08) 8987 6505 or (08) 8982 2000.

Travel & Access

Groote Eylandt is easily accessible to the mainland with regular commercial flights. Luggage weight restrictions may apply.

Regional Airlink (AirNorth) offers flights to Darwin and Gove (that connect with Qantas flights to Cairns). Bookings may be made directly by phone at 08 8920 4000, http://www.airnorth.com.au/, or through Qantas reservations.

Vincent Aviation provides direct flights to Darwin & Cairns. Bookings may be made directly by phone at (08) 8980 4000 or (08) 8987 6080.

Small aircraft also provide charter flights and regular services to surrounding mainland communities.

Living In AlyangulaTelecommunications

Telstra services are available on Groote Eylandt including Mobile CDMA & NextG, fax and internet connection (broadband available). Technicians are on Eylandt regularly to service Telstra equipment.

There are four TV channels available (ABC, SBS, SCB and Imparja), and four radio stations.
