On Groote Eylandt there lived a "Gecko" called Ipilya who was 100 yards long. His appearance was much like that of Kulta and he was reputed to live in the Numarika swamp. The Aborigines associated him with thunder and the monsoonal rain because of this fearsome creature's voice. |

The 2005 annual Picnic Day, an annual event on Groote Eylandt is a terrific family day full of fun and special events. Activities included a fun run (and walk), treasure hunt, the annual Groote sprint race, tug of war, novelty races. The day finished late after hearing the Darwin Philharmonic orchestra and 2 other (rock) bands and fireworks.
